Data Definition
To better align with the abundance trend analysis being conducted on Puget Sound Chinook by the Puget Sound Partnership, WDFW performed a more statistically-robust analysis for 2016, which resulted in a change in how we report population levels; this led to our reported number to drop to 1 population.  We compared the geometric mean (a form of averaging) of each population’s 2006-2010 abundance data with the geometric mean of the 2011-2015 data and we used a test that accounts for the fact that the populations’ abundance data aren’t normally distributed (i.e., our data doesn’t look like a bell curve). We report the number of populations whose abundance data have statistically significantly increased from the earlier to the later time period. By “statistically significantly” we mean that an increase isn’t due to sampling error alone.
