Data Definition
Industrial non-electric fossil fuel consumption refers to direct fuel use for industrial processes and to a smaller degree space heating of industrial buildings. Much of the direct energy consumption in the industrial sector in Washington occurs at the state’s five refineries. The EIA tracks state level energy consumption at the sector level and by fuel type. As with indicator 1.3a Commerce will use a three year trailing average smoothing technique to reduce the year-to-year data variation. For reporting year 2012 Commerce will average fuel consumption the industrial sub-sector for the years 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Data Frequency
Annual reporting from EIA, lags 18 months. June 2014 is when calendar year 2012 data will be reported.
Target Rationale
Over the past several years direct fossil fuel consumption by the industrial sector has grown modestly. Maintaining fossil fuel consumption in the industrial sector at the 2010 level noted in 1.3 b, while growing the economy, is an ambitious target.
