Data Source
WSDA data was derived from 2008 - 2012 WSDA archived crop databases. WSDA data is created and maintained by WSDA mapping staff. The most recent crop data is available at http://agr.wa.gov/PestFert/natresources/AgLandUse.aspx. USDA data is derived from the USDA NASS Washington Land in Farms publications (http://www.nass.usda.gov/Statistics_by_State/Washington/Historic_Data/economics/landinfm.pdf) and the 2012 Preliminary Census of Agriculture http://www.agcensus.usda.gov/Publications/2012/. USDA data is maintained by NASS staff in the NW Regional Office.
Data Definition
Working land is defined as cropland. WSDA data is calculated using GIS. Polygons are field borders, acreage is a calculated value. Polygon attributes include crop type, which allows data to be queried or filtered. The data was filtered to exclude certain crop types tracked by WSDA in the geodatabase that do not pertain to this report. The crop types excluded were: Golf course, Driving range, Shellfish, Pasture, and Developed. USDA Land in Farms is defined as any place from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products are produced and sold. USDA data was compiled through the use of NASS surveys.
Data Frequency
WSDA data is archived and published annually. USDA data is published annually and every five years.
Target Rationale
Maintaining and increasing agricultural land is necessary to enhance our economy and to feed future populations. Based on recent trends of WSDA data, the target was set to increase acreage of working farms from 7.2 to 7.3 million acres by 2020.
